Welcome to Devon Partnership NHS Trust! We would like to invite you to apply for the Consultant Psychiatrist post working in General Adult Urgent and Inpatient Care.

The post sits within Urgent and Inpatient Care in the South Devon and Torbay Local Delivery Unit (LDU) based at Torbay Hospital. The post holder will offer assessment, diagnosis and treatment of informal and detained patients admitted to the inpatient service, discharge RC responsibilities for those detained patients, provide senior clinical leadership to the inpatient team and be prepared to work across inpatient and Home Treatment Services to work towards maximising availability of inpatient beds to those in need and working with the local teams to manage the entire urgent and inpatient care pathway for the locality.

Patient safety and Quality Improvement are key aspects of the role and training will be provided if required. Programmed Activities are negotiable for research, teaching, medical management and other special interests.

You will take part in on-call rota and other consultants from the area will be expected to provide cross-cover for leave.

You will be well supported by a dedicated full-time medical staffing department.

This post is suitable as a first NHS consultant, an existing or post-retirement consultant with a broad level of general adult psychiatric expertise. International candidates are welcome to apply. Experience of working in adult community mental health services is preferable but support will be given to doctors wishing to move from other psychiatric specialties or roles.

Approved Clinician status at appointment is preferable but those who would be eligible eg doctors applying from abroad, will be supported to obtain this authority.

We have excellent IT and full electronic record across our services and are in the process of a clinician-led design of our own clinical record system.

A mentor and peer group will be provided. You will have 2.5 Supporting Programmed Activities (10 hours a week) to support your professional development, attend your monthly peer group, quarterly medical advisory committee and local post-graduate meetings.


The Devon Partnership NHS Trust has close links with the Universities of Exeter and Plymouth. There are active collaborative research projects between NHS and academic staff and NHS Consultants. The Trust encourages clinical staff to engage in research. There are a number of research projects being carried out across the Trust and the post holder will be encouraged to engage in research depending on their particular areas of interest. The post holder will be expected to support any team based research activity. Anyone involved in research is required to adhere to the National Framework for Research Governance.
