Job Description:

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Older Peoples Mental Health (OPMH) Directorate as a Ward Manager at Beech Ward.

Beech ward, based on the grounds of Torbay General Hospital, is a 16 bedded inpatient mental health ward supporting primarily older adults above the age of 65 with functional mental illnesses. It has been rated outstanding by the Care Quality Commission.

Main duties of the job

As a Ward Manager you will lead the nursing team in providing high-quality care and support to older adults experiencing an acute episode of mental illness, while also supporting your colleagues and promoting good teamwork.

You will empower recovery and deliver supervision to staff across the ward to deliver a high standard of healthcare. You will lead by example, acting as a positive role model to all members of the nursing team, working with the ward leadership team to create a caring and compassionate culture that provides high-quality, patient-centred care. Other duties include:

  • To provide leadership and management to the ward and clinical team
  • To provide evidenced based professional support and advice to the multi-disciplinary team.
  • To lead and promote education and staff development for the continued professional growth of the team members and students.
  • To ensure the delivery of high standards of nursing care in accordance with evidence based professional practice, policies and procedures.
  • Ensure legislation policies and procedures are implemented and staff has access to them and an understanding of their use.
  • Manages allocated budget ensuring resources are efficiently and effectively used and maintained.

Qualifications

Essential

  • A professional Mental Health Qualification (RMN/RNLD).
  • Evidence of Post Registration Education.
  • Teaching qualification/mentoring training.
  • Up to date knowledge of Older peoples Mental Health Functional and Younger Adults.

Desirable

  • IT Skills.
  • Post graduate qualification relevant to specialism.
  • Management qualification.

Experience

Essential

  • Post registration experience in older adult care.
  • Substantial experience of working at a senior clinical level.
  • Experience working within a MDT.
  • Clinical Supervision and Mentoring Experience.
  • Experience of managing staff.

Desirable

  • Experience of managing budgets.

Knowledge and Skills

Essential

  • An understanding of the Mental Health Act/Mental Capacity Act principles.
  • Able to communicate complex and sensitive information to individuals and teams.
  • Critical thinking and problem solving skills.
  • Effectively manage inpatient flow.
  • Ability to assess and manage risk effectively.
  • Lead and supervise staff to provide a high quality, effective service.
  • Negotiation skills.
