Learning Disability Nurse Jobs

Learning Disability Nurses

Learning disability nurses specialise in providing tailored advice, care and support to individuals with learning disabilities, ensuring individuals lead fulfilling and independent lives.

Registered Learning Disability Nurses work within our inpatient facility and as part of our multi-disciplinary teams in the community, including Acute Liaison nurses who are based in the local District General Hospitals.

The role encompasses working in a holistic, person-centred way to complete comprehensive health assessments, develop personalised care plans and delivery specialist interventions to support individuals to access mainstream health care services and prevent inappropriate admission to hospital where possible.

Learning Disability Nurses working in our inpatient service will assist / oversee activities of daily living such as personal hygiene, nutrition, and mobility, promoting as much independence as possible.

Another important element of the Learning Disability Nurse Job involves health education/promotion, working alongside individuals and their families about health management, nutrition, preventative care and promoting healthy lifestyle choices.

Learning Disability nurses also advocate for the rights and needs of those with learning disabilities, ensuring they receive appropriate care within the wider healthcare system and the broader community, to reduce the risk of diagnostic overshadowing and prevent premature deaths of people with learning disabilities as a result.

At Devon Partnership Trust, Learning Disability Nurses  educate and supervise other healthcare staff, caregivers, and family members, ensuring best practices are followed. Additionally, nurses engage in research and service improvements to improve understanding and treatment of learning disabilities and have the opportunity to stay updated with the latest developments to incorporate evidence-based practices by having regular clinical nursing ‘Team Briefings / Forums’.

You may already be a Registered Learning Disability Nurse, but for those who are looking to enter the profession, the main entry requirement to becoming a Learning Disability Nurse is through a degree course at university. You can find Learning Disability Nurse Courses here.
